BE USEFUL WHEN THEY LOOK

Local search starts with getting the basics right.

Test the journey a customer would take

Choose one service you want to be found for and one genuine customer situation. For an illustrative Kelowna repair business, the question might be whether it handles a particular repair in the customer's area. Check what a visitor can learn from your business profile and the page it links to. Can they confirm the service, location or service area, opening hours and next step without guessing?

Write down missing or conflicting information before changing anything. A ranking screenshot alone will not reveal whether a customer can complete the journey. Ask someone unfamiliar with the business to try it on a phone and note the first point of uncertainty.

Review the business profile against reality

Check your name, main category, address or service area, hours and website link. Google's business representation guidelines require an accurate real-world identity and location information. Do not add service keywords to a business name that are not part of its actual name, or create profiles for locations you do not operate.

Use current photographs that help someone recognize the premises, understand the service or know what to expect. Keep a small change log with the date, person responsible and source used to confirm an update. This is especially useful when seasonal hours, access arrangements or the service area change.

Give each important service a useful page

A service page should answer a real question in enough detail to help someone decide whether to enquire. Explain what the service covers, who it may suit, what information you need and what happens next. Use genuine examples of the work or process where you have permission and evidence. Connect related pages with clear link text so visitors can move from a question to the relevant answer.

Google's SEO Starter Guide recommends useful, organized content and descriptive links. Apply that principle before making more pages. A separate page is worthwhile when it serves a different need; replacing a place name in otherwise identical text gives the reader little new value.

For the Okanagan, be specific about where you actually work. Explain any meaningful difference in arrangements for Kelowna, West Kelowna or Lake Country in one helpful service-area section when appropriate. Do not invent an office in each community to create a larger-looking footprint.

Make review handling part of customer care

Build a consistent way to invite honest feedback after a genuine customer experience, then assign someone to read and respond to it. Google's review guidance prohibits incentives in exchange for reviews. Keep replies relevant and protect private details. A complicated complaint may need a brief public acknowledgement followed by a direct conversation through an appropriate channel.

Use recurring feedback to improve the underlying information. If several people ask about parking or preparation, update the relevant page instead of answering the same question indefinitely. That makes the next visit easier even before any search visibility changes.

Record a baseline you can compare

Save a dated snapshot of the services and pages you are reviewing. Where you have authorized access, record relevant search queries, page visits and enquiries from your existing measurement tools. Compare equivalent periods and note campaigns, closures or seasonal differences that may affect the picture. A change in total traffic may hide a more useful change in the right kind of enquiry.

Google describes local results as influenced by relevance, distance and prominence, and says a better local ranking cannot be purchased through a request to Google. Its local ranking guidance is a useful boundary for judging ambitious promises. Set a review date and look for evidence; avoid a guaranteed position or fixed deadline.
